Making a start on my UDS and doing a quick search regarding fire baskets showed up a few issues with ash choking out the fire. Has anyone fitted an external rod to allow you to agitate the basket or would that just introduce a lot of ash and dust onto the contents ?

The best designs I've seen have legs mounted to the charcoal basket so the ash has somewhere to fall.  One guy even had a pan for the ash so he could remove it without having to dump it over at the end of the cook.  Not sure how he agitated the basket encouraging the ash to fall.  In my WSM a smartly placed kick to the legs works wonders.

I am thinking you would end up with ash all over your food.

This is my basket for my UDS. If I was making another one I would use larger expanded metal. I was just using what I had. It will do a large brisket with no problems of getting ashed out.

Happy smoken.

No need for a shaker as long as you have some type of legs on the basket. The ash will still fall through the coals. The longest I have gone so far with my 12" deep 14" dia basket is 17 hrs and had no issues with it choking itself out.
