Fed up!

Here’s my mailbox mod with a Auber PID controller on top. I added a few holes in the mailbox so the AMNPS has no problem staying lit. You can see that the mailbox is elevated slightly for good air flow thru the holes in the mailbox bottom.

For what it's worth I light pellets in the AMNPS and let it burn for a few minutes, then blow it out, then blow on it again to get fire again, and repeat a couple times. Then into the MES.
Maybe the mailbox is my only option.
I'll do a search, or if anyone has a good link on how to make it?

He's done multiple posts on the mod, so I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for--just too many. Hopefully he'll see this and join this conversation. I use the tray inside my MES and never have an issue. Do exactly as you said nuke them for 1 min, let them burn for around 10 min, blow it out and stick it in the smoker. Where are you placing the tray? My MES 40 came with a sausage hanging rack and I sit it in the bottom left of the smoker and then put the MES on top of it so it is getting air under and all around it. Chip dumper pulled 3/4 the way out in the dump position.

Before I added the mailbox mod, I tried putting the AMNPS in every available spot I could think of. I even tried removing the chip dumper all together. But nothing worked for me. I couldn't get it to burn for so much as half an hour.

I usually put it on the bottom rack, next to the chip burner port, and leave the tray pulled out 1/3 to 1/2 way. Sometimes I'll leave the door cracked a little, but I hate losing that amount of smoke just to keep the pellets going.
Sometimes it works like a charm, but other times it doesn't work at all.

Also have issues with the fat dripping onto the pellets in some cooks, since they're not protected. Either causes a flare up, or just puts them out.

So it looks like a mod is my option, since I'm not springing for a new smoker any time soon.
