I've smoked with temps at 20F in a snow storm, my little electric is insulated plus I use a wind break, this year I want to try out the GOSM wide using a wind break and maybe a welding blanket to keep it snug. At least that's what I do in Southern Ohio
The fall won't slow me down and actually I think I enjoy the fall, winter, and spring time smoking because there are no flies hanging around. They are one univited guest that I don't like showing up at my smokes.
Another reason I am going to like it even more this year than in the past is my new electric is load, set and forget till it's done and I have great Q for my family and friends.
I might slow down a little, but not much. You have to block the wind around here even to cook on a grill in October. I use OSB & poly tarps, whatever it takes to break the wind. With my GOSM I have to get up close on the back and sides to reflect some of the lost heat back to the unit or else it's full open burner to cook. I only smoke about 2 or 3 times a month, so winter doesn't really affect me. I grew up in 20 to 40 below zero winter temps. It's pretty amazing what you can get used to dealing with though. If it's so cold that my neighbors are having trouble starting their vehicles to get to work, well I propably won't be smoking that day.
Here in Wisconsin, I find I use my smoker more in the winter than in the summer as we always have some thing to do and can't manage the smoker properly. Family favorites are brisket and pulled pork that I usually cook for 16 plus hours! Due to the long smoking time, we tend to fill up the smoker and freeze the leftovers for later. It's hard to beat a smoked turkey as this has become the meal of choice on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The only thing I do different in the winter is to make some sort of wind block.
I will normally usethe smoker more during the summer. Mainly because we live in an old farmhouse and have no A/C. I have smoked in winter time but most of the time the wife cooks on the stove just to add more heat to the house in the winter.
