Someone posted the other day about Kroger's own name brand meats. The name had the word "Tender" in it. I can't find the post but need help about it. The writer mentioned it was not a good choice for him/her because it had salt and phosphates or something. I hate to be a bother but simply want to know if I should avoid smoking meats from Kroger? Thanks a million !

Nothing wrong with kroger meat. Alot of pork and poultry is sold pre brined like you mentioned. That's everywhere not just kroger. Unless you purchase from a higher end butcher
Lordy Jake--I know you feel like you "dun took me to raise". Thanks. I was having trouble finding anything at BJs, Publix, and Ingles today. Didn't want to tackle the Costco Covid crowd today. I just remember reading something about Kroger meats. Thanks again my friend. ( I think y'all maybe ought to consider adopting me?)

I should have also said that while it's USDA inspected it doesn't mean it tastes good :emoji_laughing: some stuff some stores sell just isn't good quality. Safe to cook/smoke/eat yes but taste good maybe not. We have a chain grocery store here that sells a line of meat that most people I know that have tried it once have said never again will they buy it. Of course this chain runs ads that always have this line of meat on sale cheap and I think that suckers people in at least once I know it did us.

Meat you buy from a big corporate grocery store in the US is going to be USDA inspected and safe to cook/smoke
thanks--someone posted that heir smmokes were not good when bought from Kroger---I was investigating what this meant...

My only advice is to shy away from meat graded select for grilling/smoking. There is nothing wrong with it, some poor critter did its best. Just not as tender as choice and prime. But good for slow stewing or long braising. Even makes good burger meat if you can find bulk beef or pork fat to add to the grind. And it is very inexpensive.

It’s funny to say I had some kid argue with me so to say the same thing today. I’m 36 and if he was 20 I would be surprised. I’ve always had great Q from Kroger meats and never any complaints from the wife or kids about my cooking. He acted like I was trying to reverse seat spare ribs or something when I was talking to the butcher about getting whole Tri-tips ordered in.

It’s interesting that you ( WV_Crusader WV_Crusader ) mention tri-tip in the Kroger thread. The only tri-tip that I seem to find at Kroger is the pre-seasoned, pre-marinated ones.
I can get them at Publix but they’re pretty high IMO.

I really like tri-tip but they seem to be harder to find in the southeast.

Yeah, here in Knoxville, the pre-marinated Tri-tips are all that I can ever find. I bought two of the different seasonings, and I won't buy them again. I get Kroger meat all of the time without issue. I actually got some nice rib roasts today :emoji_anguished:

One take away from this would be know what you're buying . Look on the label to see the percent of sodium in a serving if you have salt concerns , or if you want to brine a pork loin or chicken get one that's not already enhanced .
Next time you're at the store see if you can compare the labels from a product that says " tender " to one that says " all natural " Look at the sodium amounts .
