I made the "Brinkman" mods to my MF charcoal smoker today and I am currently brining my whole chicken in just water and kosher salt.  I have created a rub of kosher salt, ground pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika.  Do you all think this rub will work?  After my first run with my smoker prior to mods (which did not go well), I am trying to impress my wife.  I really hopes this does the trick!

Since you are brining the bird you may want to consider leaving out the salt in the rub, or at least cutting back on it. You didn't give us any ratios for your rub so all I can say is go light on the salt and pepper and heavy on the garlic, onion and paprika. I have used something like this in the past for chicken-

1/4 cup paprika

1/4 cup granulated garlic

1/4 cup granulated onion

1 tablespoon black pepper

1 tablespoon of kosher salt

YMMV. Good Luck.

Thank for the reply.  I used thr recipe from Jeff's book:

1 TBSP Kosher salt

1 TBSP Coarse ground pepper

1 TBSP Garlic powder

then I added:

1 TSP Paprika

1 TSP Onion Powder

Just FYI...I got nervous abotu mine and copied your rub recipe instead.  I hope it's good!
