I got to thinking about something I used a long time ago when I was in the Middle East as well as the high desert in California. This is a great piece of gear and it works, believe me.

First you soak it in water and then fill it with water. As long as there is a breeze passing through, you can drink cold water in 100+ degree temps. It works on the same principle as a swamp cooler.

Just figure I'd post it and see if any other desert or military types have used one. With us being high 90's and into the 100's here, it brought back some memories.

Since I have 2 swamp coolers I do understand how they work.

They can be great.

Thanks!

Interesting Pete, I have never tried one. Bet that would be handy for me to take camping.

grew up with them hanging in front of the family car-still use them to this day-almost works as well as a water cooler full of ice. lets go 1 step further with the window mount cooler.contraption with the fan-I think used water

Grew up using one every summer day on the ranch. The air movement around them is pretty important though. My dad kept on hanging on the farmhand (loader built out of a truck frame turned backwards, with a big sweep fork, for hauling bales into the stackyard) we had one on the stack. Our water was never very cool, his was just right. Of course he was zipping around the hayfield at about 25 miles and we were stuck on the stack. Also used to use an old glass gallon jug with layers of burlap wrapped around it, which we would saturate when filling the jug in the morning and maybe at lunchtime if we were lucky enough to come back to the house. Thanks for the memories.
