Cutting a lid on top of firebox

I was thinking of cutting a lid and putting a grate in my fire box for searing chicken or grilling if I wanted too ..my question is I used 1/4" steel.. do you think it will warp on me ..I put a piece of 1/4" plate on top of the okl Joe Bandera fire box and it warped on me ..I just don't want to go threw all the work of making the fire box then it warps on me

That is a side view the top will be bigger with hinges on it
 
Here is a photo of my LoneStarz offset that has a lid on the firebox. It has a 1/4” griddle plate under the lid. I can post more photos if you’d like to see more detail.

Thanks for the reply I was thinking of cutting out the door like this ..Just not sure if I'm cutting to much steel ..but then I look at the Oklahoma highland and they have a flip top lid that has thinner metal
