Brian, that sucks you lost some fish, but just think, you didn't have to clean them. LOL!!!

This is not a joke, please try it and let me know if it works as good for you as it does for me. Take a plain'ol flour tortilla, and tear off or cut aprox 2 1/2'' - 3'' wide by 4 to 6'' long. Fold it in 3rds and stick it on either a single or treble hook. I use single hooks. I know at this point you're thinking I'm yanking your chain, I can assure you that I'm not. Please try it out, you'll surprise how well they stay on the hook. The tortilla turns into a gooie dough ball. I've been using this bait for over 30 yrs, and it out fishes stink baits, nightcrawlers, clams, chicken livers.
Yrs ago I was fishing 20' from this Mexican family, and they were absolutely kicking my but. I had one fish, and they were catching fish after fish, so I asked them what they were using for bait, and sure enough flour tortilla strips. I thought for sure that they were BS'ing me until I saw them baiting their hooks.
I know it sounds stupid, just try it please, the best part about it is you can also eat the bait. Still to this day it's the best bait I have ever used for catfish and trout carp eat it up as well, and they are fun as heck to catch.
Just try it, and let me know how it works for you.
Dan.
Never tried that Dan but sure have caught a lot of cats on bread. Like you said , ball up a piece from this middle and stick it on a #6 hook and it'll stay there!

Try the tortilla, it gets super gloopy, but it stays on the hook, I was totally impressed by it.

I will be giving this a try tomorrow Dan.

Them channel cat? I've caught 'em on old slim Jim's in the past. Actually planning to get some chicken livers in the next day or so. Gonna do some night fishing in some of the coves around the house. I may have to try the tortilla trick as well forktender forktender - appreciate the tip!

Do it, they completely blew me away.

Dan.

I got lots of bites with tortillas but was having hard time hooking them. They just keep stealing the tortillas!
Weird, the stuff stays on my hook really well, it's actually a pain to get it off the hook. Did you thread the bait on 3 to 4 times?

For me, I have to leave 6-8' of line out and really slap it on the water a few time to get it to come off. I just use the cheap Mission brand tortillas most of the time.

I folded it 3 times than went through once than back again.

The only thing I can think of is maybe it's the brand of tortillas used.
The Mission brand is like a gob of sticky goo after soaking for a while. LOL.

My friend's kid sprays a small pile of tortillas to moisten them, then kneads in anise oil into his. He's a carp fisherman, he swears by the stuff, I've never tried it, I guess I should try it, I love the smell of anise.

I might need to try the tortilla thing in my pond, that albino channel cat is at least 36" long! I put it in the pond at 4" a bunch of years ago (maybe 10 - 15 years ago)

That is a cool fish, but in all honesty, I would probably not use it in your pond as is might make a mess of the bottom. I'd go with something like nightcrawlers or mealworms, something that is not going gunk up the water.
Then again, for all I know is that your "pond" may be an acre or more. LOL

No would never do that there are $$$ worth of Koi in there as well, I am surrounded by water here on the "Island" so fishing is easy.

Well I just rigged up with trebles with sponge and bait holder. I really don't like using trebles but my friends talked me into trying. Got some cheese dip bait. Giving it a go tomorrow.

Coming off the full moon could have their jaws locked as well, Brian.
Have you ever tried clams, night crawlers, or chucks of shad, anchovies, sardine or herring? They work everywhere I ever used them.

Thinking of trying night crawlers. This sausage is the first time I have had any luck with cats which is why I wanting to make more. I get constant bites with it. Here is my new rig I got.

Nice looking rig .

I used to use chicken livers with pantyhose tied around it . Until I was reading on the Mo. Conservation website and saw that it's illegal .

Wheaties and a bucket of water works for Carp . Not sure about catfish .
If you're having trouble losing the sausage off the hook , adjusting the hook size might help .

Find some discounted ground beef . Mix it up for your sausage , but leave it raw , and pack it around the hook .
