Cover for wood chips

Hey All,

After a long time of having it, I'm finally using my smoker. Its a BBQ-Pro Vertical Propane smoker. I see a lot of smokers have a cover for the dish that holds the wood chips, but this one doesn't. Is that normal and should I use something as a cover for the wood chips?
 
I don't think it would be necessary to have a cover. My old propane had a cast iron container with slotted lid.
