I'm curious if anyone has done competition BBQ before (I'm sure there's a bunch). I'm trying to figure out a way to best secure a 40'x40' spot from the general public. Everything is on the contestants to provided, and there are a few vendors to rent from, but I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts?

Open to ideas/suggestions - tips and pointers too!

Is there an entry fee for this competition ? If so a spot (10x10 at minimum) should be provided one would think... Any that I have entered provided spots...

If not... Thinking you will have to arrive very, very, very early (night or 2 before even) to secure that big of a spot ...

Fill us in on some details of the Comp.

Sorry, the entry fee includes a 40'x40' spot. I am trying to keep the public out of our area while cooking for 2-3 days. Thoughts I had so far are: Yellow Caution Tape, Yellow Plastic Chain Link Fencing, rent actual fencing from a company.

Besides smokers in this area are you parking vehicles as well (tow vehicle for smoker trailer) ? If so.. Park right on the "property line" on one side... Trailer (if applicable) on another line... Blocking entrance... Maybe some cheap white plastic fence post (that has a spike on it) at your local tractor supply or farm store... some orange ribbon for the other two sides...

I guess first I should have asked are the 40x40 spots butted up to each other ?? Meaning you'll have neighbors cooking on ether side of the "property line" ?? If that is the case you would only need to block off entrance at the back of cooking area... a vehicle or two across there...

Are you setting up tents?
That should help and I would think they'd be some kind of markers for each 40x40 section.

Unless the competition is in one of the particularly lawless parts of Detroit/Southside Chicago/Camden/LA/etc, I doubt you'd need to resort to actual fencing, chain link or otherwise. I've never even seen yellow caution tape up at a competition site, though if you want something to more clearly mark off your site, it's easy enough to do.

Mostly I see vehicles, tables, and tents set up (as others have already suggested here) in a way that puts the food prep/smoking area towards the back of the site, where it is at least partially shielded from view.

I've only cooked at a handful of actual competition level contests, plenty of backyard events but I'm a BBQ judge.

Basically, the organizer asks how big of a campsite you need, and water and electricity are sometimes provided,

The general public is allowed to wander into the cooks area, but it's recommended that they stand their distance.
