So, I have a cheap off-set New Braunfels that I feel I've outgrown. I plan to do a full build of an offset smoker in the near future, but don't have enough time before a BBQ competition I plan to compete in. My plan is to borrow a smoker from a friend and also use mine to get enough grill space for the amount of meat I have. I have some 1 1/2 inch ceramic fiber insulation on hand and had an idea on how to apply it to my firebox quickly without a lot of hassle and messing with steel sleeves, etc. My idea is to cut up some of the insulation into narrow strips and mash it into a clay mixture to adhere to the inside or outside of my firebox. Seems like a crazy idea, I know, but at this point, I can't think of anything that sounds more do-able and fun. Has anyone tried this, or have knowledge to prove it won't work?
