I saved part of the last few batches of jerky that I made for my relatives that are coming over for Christmas. When all of the family gets here tomorrow, I plan to have a jerky taste-off. I also figured there are going to be a lot of people getting dehydrators for Christmas, so they should know which flavors are the crowd favorites.

I have been blazing my way through the Owens BBQ jerky/cure flavor packets. The only one left to do is Mesquite...but that will have to wait until my next batch of jerky. I used to make my own marinates, and my all-time fave was garlic-chipotle with a few drops of Dave's Ultimate Insanity Sauce (Habarnero), but have found the ease and convenience and low cost of the Owens BBQ flavor/cure packets to good to pass up.

All flavors were shrink-wrapped and frozen in the deep freeze over the past couple of months. For the taste-off, the following flavors will be evaluated:

Jerky Flavor (top left)
Hickory (top right)
Prime Rib (center)
Teriyaki (bottom left), and
Garlic Pepper (bottom right)

Unfortunately, the Maple-Jalapeno jerky was ALL eaten by my office-mates...so it will not make the taste off tomorrow.

Also, if you are new to making dehydrator jerky, I have posted a step-by-step thread on how to do it. The link follows:

Merry Christmas!

And the winners are

Hickory and Garlic Pepper - Tied for first

Only Teriyaki got one not-good vote, but then others said that he was wrong.

All were declared good though

UPDATED RESULTS: I brought all the jerky that was left to the office. The best tasting was rated as 1, worst tasting as 5. Results are:

Hickory - 2.0
Garlic Pepper - 2.4
Teriyaki - 3.3
Original Jerky - 3.6
Prime Rib - 3.7

The consensus opinion was Hickory and Garlic Pepper were both very good and even though the others did not score as high, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers were still good.
