I want to buy some exotic wood chips to use in the pellet grill (Pimento, Guava, Kiawe). Was thinking of just buying the metal box and going that route on the grates. Anyone try something similar?

that or a tube, dont try to let the auger feed them in.

I've taken a small brownie oven pan and lined it with foil, and then got a piece of lump charcoal nice and ashed over. Put the burning lump in the pan, and then you can put chips on top of it.

It works fine, but I never really noticed any augmented smoke from it, even when using a neutral wood pellet. Perhaps I didn't go big enough, but I didn't want to introduce a lot of extra heat.

I haven't tried mixing chips in a pellet tube, that seems like a much better idea actually.

I don't have a pellet smoker , but I do use a 12" tube with my MES . I have good results mixing wood chips with pellets in the tube . Not sure how it would work with a pellet grill .

microwaving the pellets really helps them burn in a pellet smoker, its amazing how a little moisture affects them in a low oxygen environment and chips will probably benefit also
