I am building a UDS and was wondering what I should put underneath the charcoal basket (if anything at all) to collect ash for easy clean up when I'm all done.

In my mind, a UDS is a big WSM.  Along those lines, the WSM has the charcoal grate lifted off the bottom by the leg screws which allow ash to fall thru the grate and into the bottom section of the cooker.  I'd imagine you can lift your charcoal basket off the bottom by several inches to achieve the same result.

Easy cleanup would either be disassemble and dump the ashed out or build some sort of door. With the WSM I disassemble and dump.  I think the door would be less desirable because it could introduce another air leak point.

I was going to have the basket lifted off the bottom by a few inches to allow airflow anyhow, then I thought if I were to put something under that, air wouldn't be able to pass through. Just dumping it out had crossed my mind but thank you for the reassurance! I'll try that out on my first dry run.
