So went to work today and cut the heavy guage expanded metal with the torch and put it in the steel bender and made it into a cylinder. Only problem that i might see is that the basket is 12" tall by 18" wide is that to tall for the basket? I can easily cut it down tomorrow if you guys say thats to tall. But the width should be good right.

I would keep it that tall. Don't always need to fill it full.
Then I would use a pizza pan (for a baffle ) to lay on top of the basket.

^^This.

I recently built mine 12" tall and it it down. I wish I had left it tall for the reasons jrod stated. You can use that extra height to your advantage in the future if you want or need to.

My home made charcoal basket is about 9", and it is fine for my smoker.  I do agree that leaving it taller would be better if you have the space.  You can always just leave it empty.

The comment about "if you cut it down it is forever smaller" is good advice.

Either way, good luck to you!!!
