Char Broil Silver Smoker question..

Have a Char Broil Silver Smoker w/ Mods. Any fellow users of this baby know why there is a top vent on the firebox? I've played around with it while smoking and can't see why it would be used. Any thoughts?

It's probably just for using the sfb as a small charcoal grill with food grates installed. Chargriller has a tabletop grill with top vents that looks just like a sfb for the Smokin' Pro, without the outlet cutout for the smoke chamber.
