SCV - So Cal
After making indaswamp indaswamp version of Cantelope Sorbet my niece liked it but asked if I could make it as an ice cream instead.

I said no problem but you will make it and I will help you along the way. I did have to be careful teaching her proper knife skills but she did pretty good and it turned out pretty damn good in the end. She wanted to add some mango which was a good choice. After blending it all up it went into the ice cream machine but ended up taking three times the suggested time to around 120 minutes to get it to a proper consistency.

I gotta admit this turned out better than the sorbet I made. It is also helping us to bond as our unexpected family.

1/2 of a fresh cantelope
1/2 cup fresh mango
1 cup whipping cream
2 cups half and half
2 eggs
3/4 cup raw sugar
1 Teaspoon Vanilla extract
Juice from 1/2 lime
1/2 teaspoon salt.

Cut up the fruit and blend very well in a blender, add the rest and blend some more. Then add it all in the Ice Cream Machine.

Looks good! I'm NOT getting a ice cream maker!!!! No. No. No!
I remember when I was a kid spending hours hand cranking a machine similar to this. Dad would keep it fed with ice and rock salt.

Since you are NOT getting an ice cream machine definitely DO NOT buy one with a compressor that you have to do nothing but plug it in and press start (after filling it of course). They can be bought for under $99 these days.

I am not a fan of ice cream, gelatto or sorbet. Wife is the opposite.
She has looked at small home units for some time to make it fresh and without all the added junk.

I don't understand the add of a compressor. Educate me please.
Did a quick search and the lowest price came in around $140

With a compressor it has a built in freezing system. No need to store parts in a separate freezer overnight.

Here is one for $99 - $20 coupon = $79. If you pay a little more you get a digital readout with more options. You also pay more for a larger capacity tub.

EDIT: I had to look back but I purchased mine in 2021 for $170. It is 1.6 quarts but is physically much larger than the ones made today. It still works great every time I have used it.

Lol! My mom and dad had one of those old crank jobs. Made the best ice cream. Even if a bit of salt made it into it!
