The easy answer is yes, but you would also be cutting off the meat that has been seasoned with rub (assuming it has). How about cutting the butt in half and add rub to cut surface. Two 4.5 lb butts will cook in less time ( not half so I'm told) than a 9 lb er.
I got up at 4 a.m. this morning so that I could get a 7 lb butt going by 4:30 a.m. Getting up at 5 would have been sleeping in.
I've heard from others that you can start the butt the night before, foil it (or not) when you wake up, then finish to the appropriate IT in the morning. Haven't tried this myself.
You can, but the half with bone will cook much slower. Foiling at 150 will get the whole piece done in 9 hr. and give you the juice (which has most of the spices) to add back in.
