I know this is not a car forum but this is a health issue.

Let me say I have not worked on cars for the last 15-20 years and I thought I was keeping up but I had never heard of this before.  The heater blower in my grand prix started screaming so I took it out and found a filter above it.  I went to you tube and found out that the water diverter was a bad design and an aftermarket part was out to replace it.  That caused water to enter the cabin air filter and fan blower.  I have never heard of a cabin air filter before and they are to be replaced every 15000 miles or each year.  The oil change place we use has never mentioned it.  The dealership has never mentioned it either.

This is what it looked like after 10 years.
I can’t believe we have been breathing air that was drawn through that filter.

I just changed the wife’s Toyota rav4s filter and after 10000 miles it was ½ full of crap.

To change the Toyotas I had to remove the glove box.  To change the grand prix I had to remove the cowl under the windshield to get to it.  It was not hard to get to them although there were no markings anywhere on either vehicle that the air filter is here.

Why if a filter has to be serviced every year would the car company’s hide it and make you go through hoops to change it?  Why is it secret?   Am I just slow and everyone else knows about cabin air filters.

When I bought the rav4 we looked at lots of types and models and I never heard from any salesperson that the cabin air filter is right here or anything about it.

Since all the air you breathe in your vehicle goes through the cabin air filter I suggest everyone change there’s at least every year.

If I had known there was a filter I would not have had to replace the blower but on the other hand if the blower had not gone bad I would never have found out about cabin air filters.

What do you think?  Did you know there was a cabin air filter in your vehicle? Am I the only one?

Good info, I knew the newer cars have them, Ours does. They want to sell me a $60.00 filter every time i go in for an oil change. I always tell them no I'll change it myself

Most of the new vehicles have them, the price of a new filter is absolutely insane, you could buy a Wagyu brisket for what they charge for one. Makes zero sense to me, what are you filtering?  Not like the "cabin" is hermetically sealed......   Tear it out, throw it away and buy some meat!!  Just my 2 cents worth-

Ours has one and I believe the entire dash has to be removed to replace it. I've declined the offer of a $400 replacement every time they've asked.

My Honda dealer told me about it, said it was $90 to replace. When I asked why so much they said it was difficult to get to. After a bit of research on youtube I replaced it myself...took less than 5 minutes...I love youtube as much as SMF!

Morning..... I had to look it up..... Not in a 99 Blazer.... thanks for the info....
My 97 S-10 does not have one either….I think I will blame my COPD on my truck from now on.  It wasn’t smokes… it was no filter.

Both the filters I need are on amazon for 9.99 prime.  For the Toyota I paid around 15.00 at O’Reillys  auto parts.

I pay around 3.00 for the furnace filters I use and think I could cut one up and make many filters to fit.   I agree that it would be better to be without a dirty filter.

I am glad auto manufactures don’t design furnaces or you would have to remove the heat exchanger to change the filter.

It makes no sense at all to hide a filter and have to take apart part of the vehicle to get to it.
