Burner question

I'm wanting to start using a propane burner inside my smoker. What I've done for years is use an old beer keg that's welded up like a small bbq pit. Put wood chips in a tray above the charcoal.
I plan on running hose thru smoker wall to propane tank. For safety purposes the air mixer portion of the burner should be outside of smoker.
I can find any burners with the air mixer located far enough away to allow this.
Any ideas or suggestions would surely be appreciated. Thank you.
