In all the years I have been smoking meats I have never done a brisket, didn't have the patience. I recently dedicated to try it. Went to the store to get one and I could not believe the cost of them. Now I am not a "piker," and my net worth is in the 7 figures, but I'll be damed if I will pay that price for a "low grade" cut of beef.

I'll be damed if I will put my wife back out on the street.

YMMV

I saw people posting sales and went to get one at Costco. Didn’t see any.

$4.89/lb for choice brisket here. Chucks are $6.99/lb. I was just happy with $1.94/lb for pork butt instead of the $3.99 it was a couple months back, picked up 3 yesterday.

Brisket was as high as $6.99 in April here. Now it's been between $2.39-2.99 for Prime at Sam's, which ain't bad. Butts were on sale last week at Kroger for .99! Couldn't believe it. Got a few for the freezer.

Close to same in Ohio. Butts were $0.99 at Kroger. Prime brisket 3.79 at Sams. Choices $3.49 at GFS

Hmmm... Weird that so many can take that "Low Grade" cut of meat and turn it into something that some people will absolutely covet as much as Prime Rib.
And in my opinion much tastier than any high dollar "High Grade" Beef Tenderloin.

A good Choice or Prime packer brisket is worth every penny as long as it is reasonably priced per pound and cooked/smoked properly.
So it cost $50-100. for a big packer, so what, it's more bang for the buck than a Prime Rib or Tenderloin.

Totally agree Chile. However, last Prime I got 2 weeks ago at Sam's had 7 lbs of fat I removed from a 17 pounder, leaving just shy of 11 lbs. Came out great, but like 1/3 wasted.

I have paid $2.79 a pound the last few times. Once it was marked as baby back ribs for 3.99 but they corrected it for me. On a price per meal it is much lower than a beef tenderloin and tastes much better IMHO. Also more fun to make.

Chile, I can agree somewhat on the tenderloin aspect because it's just not the same flavor league imo, but you can cut up the whole tenderloin into individual steaks, pack and save. But now, the prime rib or choice standing rib roast bone in... cut into steaks or cooked whole, that is beef at its finest imo, brisket isn't the same league. Not saying I agree with OP, and yes brisket even "pricey" is a better deal, but you can't say the brisket rivals that most amazing portion of the cow.

I agree, Prime Rib/Ribeye in whichever cut is one of the more tastier parts of the cow for smoking and grilling.
But my points are that cost per pound you get more meat (bang) for your buck with a brisket.
And that many people covet good Brisket just as much as they do the prime rib.
And there is no denying that.

Other cuts whose flavor are right up there are tongue and cheeks.
Yeah, I rate them that highly.

Cheeks from almost any animal over all their cuts and beef lengua are are top notch on all accounts. Yes, bang for the buck the brisket even pricey is a good deal compared to others. I broke down and spent a little more than normal on choice ribeyes the other day, but the marbling warranted it based on the price.

Have to agree . I saved a 1 1/2 lb. section of the flat from the last one I had . Cooked it in the instant pot for taco meat . Fantastic . Ground the trim for burgers , and smoked the rest . 3 different meals for 3 people from one 12 pound brisket .
I also bought chuck pectoral . Sits behind the brisket . It's lean , but great beef flavor .
Almost like a flat . SV'd then cast iron seared .

Personally I like brisket better than tri-tip. We can get choice here for $2.49 lb. And Prime is not much more at Sam’s, but it’s an hour drive for me, so we don’t go too often. On the other hand we pay as much as $6.99 lb. for tri-tip!
