I just recently heard that there was a right and wrong way to have your fire which was a complete surprise to me. Yesterday I would open fire box and put in a log and keep it open until it lit which was a few mins. I would keep it open while it was lit for another cpl of mins but I honestly didn't notice anything different as far as smoke. I'm not sure how long people keep the flames on their logs before closing the fire box up.

Again, I don't have access to this method but I've watched a ton of YouTube videos and read an equal ton of posts here on the forum about the subject. Basically the theory is just what you are doing. Add your split with the firebox open. You can even open the vent door as well to get a lot of air flowing in. The bed of coals should be very hot so that when you put that new split on the fire it should start burning in just a few seconds. After you see that good flames are burning from your split for 30 seconds or so then you can close the firebox lid and the side door if you opened it as well. You should have pretty much TBS the whole time. There may be a bit of white smoke as the split really gets going but not more than 5 or 10 minutes. It really sounds to me like you are doing exactly what you should be doing. I am jealous of you being able to use the pure wood method. I am tempted to buy some hickory splits at HD even though they are 20 bucks just to have that pure smoke experience. I tell you what, if I could get pecan splits in that same size package for that price I would give it a try. Hickory might just have to do though.
