Hi I am new here thank you for letting me join. I had a brinkmanship smoke n grill for 10 years I upgraded to a master built electric smoker 6 years ago. But miss the charcoal taste. I found a brinkmann sports smoker for free on Facebook market. I have a question cause I can not find this exact model the charcoal bowl appears to have an inch hole right in the center. Mine I own before never did. It looks manufactur done not mod. Were some models like that and just put a foil pan under it to catch ashes? I found a sportsman on eBay with the same exact whole. My grill looks very old mayby 70tys or 80tys? Thank you for your time sorry if this is a dumb question.

Its possible that is to get more air into that area, or maybe there is a centering feature in the can itself where that slips over?

Thank you everyone for responce looks like it’s done by the manufacture and not a mod to me . As soon as I get it cleaned up going to throw some charcoal in it and give it a go on some wings this weekend the grates pretty rusty do got a lot of cleaning to do . They sell or used to an ash try to catch ashes and grease. So adding air makes sense. Just going to put a foil pan under the charcoal bowl and let the smoker do its thing.

Welcome to SMF from SE GA and you've landed at the best spot on the worldwideweb! Also not familiar with that Brinkman model but most here us a smoke tube or tray in the MES to add some smoke flavor.

I did find a bit more info and an answer to my own question. Before 1993 brinkmann charcoal bowls did have a hole in it. They were all recalled in 1994 you could have requested a modifying kit to close up the hole. Was a fire risk on wooden decks so on. Me personally just going to throw an aluminum pan under it to catch the ashes. Very intresting bit of history on it to me. Sorry guys I know I am boring. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/1994/brinkmann-provides-free-kit-for-charcoal-water-smokers

That's the air intake . There are threads on here about adding holes to increase air flow and temps .
This isn't the Sportsman , but same idea . I think that one had no hole to start with . Same thing should apply to yours . Use it first , as is to see what it does .

Just read about the recall . Look through that link on how he added holes to the side . That model didn't have the bottom hole , but if you add them in the sides , you could close the bottom on off with a bolt and a couple SS washers .
