I would be careful with the paving brick,I'm not sure if they are fired in kilns like regular bricks they might be sensitive to heat,they will more than likely crack or pop if they get to hot.not sure what type you have.
Yeah , regular pavers will crack when they get real hot. Probably won't do any real harm , but a fragment might end up in your food.....I would wrap them in foil for now and maybe look for some firebrick like they use to line furnaces n fireplaces. Home Depot might even sell firebrick , I'm not sure. I don't think they are real expensive.
Not pushing their products but I found some Weber charcoal gizmos that allow you to bank & contain the coals. About 3-4 inches deep and maybe 3 inches wide, metal. made to fit in their kettles, of course, but will fit in most other units. 2 in a pack...believe about 15 bucks...work pretty good IMO
