Bought a grill for church - big cook tomorrow - warm up

Tomorrow is Back to church Sunday, our church is a small country church founded in 1878. My wife's family has been attending for generations. We recently went through discernment and survived! This is typically how a church is shut down. We are small, about 15 people on a given Sunday but have been working since this process to grow the church.

We purchased online adds promoting back to church and we are hoping for a crowd. The plan is service at 9:30 followed by fellowship and food, hamburgers. I'm planning to grill 40 hamburgers and 20 hotlinks plus hotdogs if needed. We didn't have a grill. I picked up an Expert Grill from wally world for $96, has cast iron grates, adjustable coal grate and slide out ash pan. Of course before attempting this cook on a new grill I needed to test it out and break it in, so.... kabobs.

Well, first was assembly, 26 steps, not bad with a cold brew and a helping hand. Oiled it up and got a hot fire going. It doesn't suck but control is minimal, it's a grill, a decent one I'd say. Perfect for church.

I figure I can get at least 12 patties on it at a time, 5 minutes per round so less than half an hour to knock this cook out, we'll see!

Those are huge, the squash we get here are the size of zucchini, and zucchini are the size cucumbers. Being up here in Alberta ,we miss out on so many nice things. You guys have mutant vegetables.

I picked these up at the farmers market buy if I'd gone to Walmart they would have been much smaller.

thanks ya'll, the cook itself went well, that grill is perfect for burgers, sausage, Chicken, etc. Although it claims a 20 burger capacity I could squeeze 10 on the grates at once. From the time I lit the charcoal chimney to the time the first batch of burgers came off was 35 minutes. Each batch after took about 6 minutes. With a head start to build reserves you can push out a bunch of burgers pretty fast. I estimate that 1 charcoal load was good enough to do 80 to 100 burgers. Perfect for our church.

Our event itself while fun for us did not bring many folks to church. This is a tough cookie to crack. We'll keep trying new things and see what can eventually work. Open to ideas, especially if you've seen something that worked.

Churches are about like minded people coming together to celebrate. Growing membership is not about selling the church. It's about selling our common interests, our common beliefs, and our enjoyments of getting together.

It has been my experience that events like yours only bring the regular congregation. Sad I know because, it's a lot of work. But the fellowship makes up for it.
Think about how people find a new place of worship in today's world. Internet searches. It is imperative that a church have a professionally designed website that is updated regularly. Only the people that want to come will come but the website is how they find you.

I bought 1 of those grills about a year or so ago, works well, I been known to throw a log on it and cook/smoke something on the other side or the top rack. hard to do with my Weber kettle, the short distance between racks limits stuff you can do but is still a grilling machine.
