I have read the threads on black pipe builds and have added my own new twist, my burner t's in the middle and goes out to either end of the tank. There is for now a permanent reverse flow plate on the back side of the cook chamber and probably going to make the front one removable for burner cleaning.  My question to the august minds that come to SMFs is how high exactly is the pipe supposed to be under the reverse flow plate.  I haven't settled on slots or holes, may have to do some research on that one and figue what works best for my application.  Currently my pipe is directly under the drain/angle of the reverse flow and I would think that would lend to slots cut on the bottom side but I am wondering if the air flow is slower the "lower" the burner since hot air would move faster.  Hopefully posting some pics to add to the confusion.

Thanks,

Paul

builder of the "Contraption" since my buddies won't call it a smoker til meat actually comes off of it

Paul, evening....  Too close to the RF plate and you will have a griddle... Are you planning on having air flow through the smoker ??   Does it have a firebox ??  How will you generate smoke ??  Dave

Hi Dave, yes I am planning on there being air flow...hopefully from lower cooler areas to higher warmer ones.  I have already fabbed most of my smoker and am putting the final parts together.  Gunning for a Christmas day Bon Voyage.   I will be posting pics here shortly as I have been trying to put it down as I've completed steps. This forum has been most helpful.   As far as the reverse flow plate getting warm would that be a problem if the cooking grates were 5-6" higher.  Wondering this because I would like to use the burners to preheat as well as finish some late smokes.

Let me know what you think,

Thank, Paul

Mine is 2" below the reverse flow plate it is slotted and slots face down to kee debris out. I am sending this from my droid so no pics. Sorry
You can look in my signature for my build and scroll to the pipeburner build.
