I started smoking about 1.5 years ago with a old country pecos off set. With a young family and less time to spend tending a fire I have decided to go with a more set it and forget it smoker. I like doing chicken often and have read that gas is better for that as it reaches higher temps than electric. So I have two questions 1 what gas smoker is recommended? and 2 why does it seem like no one makes a heavy duty or high quality gas smoker? All the reviews I read seem like they are all cheaply built

+1 Electric. MES + AMNPS is pretty hard to beat. I had a gasser and it was far from set and forget. Maybe a little more than a stickburner but that's about it.

If your budget allows it, look into a pellet smoker. Most allow for higher temps than an electric, so you can sear as well as smoke. My Rec Tec is very much "Set and Forget".
