see what I did there..?

nyuck nyuck nyuck

I'll try to be short-winded (not my strong suit)

I'm designing a 120 gallon offset ( https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/making-a-couple-120-gallon-offsets.289233/ ) and, after seeing may folks have success with baffle/tuning plate setups, plan to at least be prepared to go that route with mine. I have my FB to CC opening at about 18% larger than the reverse flow calculator says it needs to be. I know I'm not building a RF, but I wanted to make SURE that I had no issues with that opening's size, especially if I was to add a baffle and whatnot. Much easier to add a blank-off plate than to cut the opening bigger.

I have not been able to find consistent info on where to start as far as size/shape/location/orientation goes in regards to the baffle though. It seems like most folks who make in-depth videos and articles about their smokers skip this detail.

Please see the below pics for a better idea of what I'm asking (nevermind the 2nd grader's coloring talent that I have in MS Paint).

So the question is... should I plan for a baffle shaped like the red, blue, or yellow lines (the dashed red and blue line segments indicate tuning plates, and aren't relevant to this question)? Also, what dimensions to start with for the distances indicated by the orange and green lines.

I'm all for over-researching things, so I may be making a mountain out of a molehill too, I dunno.

Thoughts?

TIA
- Chris

Depending on the size....but if you choose Red...it gives you a convenient/out of the way place for a water pan.

That's actually what I first thought of. Get the water pan right into what should be the hottest part of the smoker! I've got the baffle shown sitting with the top surface even with the centerline of the tank.

I'm 100% just eyeballing, but I don't feel like the 6" at 45° closes off the FB to CC opening too much and it also gives a pretty healthy angle of deflection to get the convection currents going. Seems reasonable to me, anyway, based off of what I can glean from the various youtube videos I've been watching and posts I've been reading.

It's at least a starting point.

Here's a better cross-section:

Thoughts everyone?
