I've wanted to cook a whole lamb on an asado cross for longer than I care to remember. I'm in the UK and live in sheep country so I've got easy access to the lamb, I just need something to cook it on.

I've just been cutting the parts and mocking up some pieces so far, but I'm at a stage where I can make a start welding. Hopefully, you will get the gist of how its going to fit together. The 'cross' in the pics is a mini mock up, I'd never tapped a thread into anything before so I wanted to play around before 'committing. I'm going belt and braces on the adjustable limbs of the cross by tapping the hole but then welding a nut on as well.

For stability, rather than having a large base or long permanent legs, my plan is to weld some tube to the base (as in the mock up) and then just slide a couple of lengths of rebar into the tube to counter balance the whole set up.

I'm pretty new to metalworking, so any comments/suggestions will always be welcomed.

I wanna see this in action! I think you have a solid start but I'm not a metal worker either so hopefully some of those cool kids stop by and offer up their advice.

Looks like a great start, very exciting. What are you going to attach the base to?

I'll be using this over an open fire. If you look at the last picture, my plan is to weld a couple of short lengths of tube to the base at 45 or 30 degrees. That way I can slide a 2ft/3ft length of rebar into them to act as legs that will counter the forward weight of the cross. I figure this way I can keep it relatively compact.

Sounds like that should work just fine. Let’s cook some Lamb! I’m pumped.

I managed to get the base completed today. The upright 'cross' is a mini mock up for practice, the actual one will be maybe 4 or 5 foot long. Hopefully you can get the gist of how you can alter the angle of the cross over the fire for temp control. And, how the rebar 'legs' can slide into the tube sockets to act as counterbalances. I know the welds all have faces that only a father could love - but at the moment, as long as they hold together, I'm a happy man.

I'm planning to get on with the cross now.... its all coming together nicely.

I got it finished today. It was a really enjoyable thing to build. I was hoping to do a lamb this weekend for Easter but our plans have changed. Fortunately, it’s my daughters 18th in June so we should have enough people over to warrant a whole lamb - ironically, my daughter is a vegetarian !

That looks like it turned out great Wet Spaniel! Looking forward to seeing you use that!

Nicely done Sir!
