Are these barrels any good for a UDS?

I found these barrels on Craigslist and was thinking about getting one for a UDS, but they look like they may have the dreaded red liner.   I have never actually seen it so could any of you guys tell me what you think?

What was in them? Looks like they are lined to me but there are ways to deal with that if you can't find one without a liner. If you know someone with a sandblaster that is an easy way to get rid of it.

I think what was in them is very important.  Liners can be dealt with.

you will need to remove the liner. the best way is to sand blast it. then rub it with oil then a good burn. you can use a wire brush on a grinder.....but your ears are going to ring for a while and you will be working in a barrel. so you need a mask....if you can find a sand blaster it will work great.........or i'm just across the state line north of fort smith. if you'd by the blast media i'd blast it for you. the price is beer, bbg, or brownies......or a thank you would also work.

OK...so here are my next questions.  Since the contents were in a plastic bag liner and the inside appears to be bare metal, do I still have to do a full burn out?  Is there a way to verify that?  I live in town and don't know how I could build that kind of fire without causing trouble.  I can get a propane torch, but I don't want to get it so hot that it warps.  I have heard of some people running into that.  The other question is if I don't have to burn it out, could I just paint over the existing paint with primer and then the colors I want?

I want to make sure I do this right the first time so I apologize for asking so many questions, but you guys have been a wealth of information!

i would think that a good washing at the car wash with degrease of oven cleaner should do the trick on cleaning. as far as the paint goes. i don't think the paint that is on it now is not high temp. so not sure if it would work to paint over. i'm thinking not good. but can't say for sure. their is paint stripper. i use the aircraft paint stripper on a lot of things. don't buy it in spray cans buy the liquid. it is a lot cheaper. remember to wear rubber gloves if you do use paint stripper.

For my build I bought a refurbished drum.  Although it was pretty clean, I still wanted to be sure.  I found a food safe degreaser and sprayed it on the inside of the drum.  Then I used a brush and some water to clean out.     Then I coated the inside with veggie oil and did a empty smoke for 4 hours.

simple green should be ok just flush with water same thing with oven cleaner.

I used Mean Green. Same as simple green

I would think any organic cleaner would be food safe, but check first because I have never used a green cleaner.
