In a couple of weeks I will be needing a new reliable electric smoker and I thought I would go down to Sam's and grab an old gen MES 40 before they are not available and how I have had good luck with mine. When I got there they did not have any and the gal told me that they had been recalled, the old gen? All of them. Hmm. Went next door to Cabela's to look, They have a half dozen or so new gen. Have been reading on these and the jury is still out but I decide to pick one up just in case and in the meanwhile see if I can order in the older model. $450.00! ouch. Took one home and left it in the box while I did more research.Well older models of the MES 40 are like hens teeth now. The more I waited and read I do not have the warm fuzzies about the new gens being reliable, too many problems plus big time temp variations across the rack. Yesterday at noon I ordered the Smokin-it 3, it shipped at 4:55, and is due on Friday. More to follow.

I know Todd has a few of those so if he says good call then....Good Call!!!!

I still have my 30 - analog and it seems to be doing okay, just not very big.

As you may or may not know I'm a recent, very happy new owner of a #3. Like you I just could not, in all honesty, justify spending $450 on a Mes 40 (old or new gen) especially after reading Todds very detailed thread on it. I believe you'll be very happy with your decision. Looking forward to future posts on your smokes with it.....Regards

Your post was one of the reasons i went with it.

Hey Todd, were's the best place for the AMNPS in the #3? Thinking about a mailbox mod.

I have used the amnps in the smokin it 3 with no issues to date. Those that have had an issue have simply just drilled a hole in the bottom of the unit. Single layer of steel on the bottom, so no worries going through double walled insulated sides. I highly doubt a mailbox mod would serve you well on that smoker, just not needed (remember it's not a MES). I put my amnps next to the heating element on the bottom of the smoker on the right side of the element.
