I got cats visiting my patio too often. I find turds, spots where they spray my smokers, and just general principle that I don't want somebody's cat in my backyard.

So I went to X and asked Grok. Here's one of the suggestions, and one I like

" Slick Surface: Add a strip of aluminum flashing or plastic sheeting along the top 1-2 feet of the fence. Cats’ claws slip on these, and it’s cheap at hardware stores. Seal any gaps so they can’t wedge their paws in. "

I found this at Lowes . My question is, how easy is to drill through ? I'm thinking of attaching it with screws .

^^^ Both Steve and Rich have you covered. ^^^

Was just about to say the same. Thin stock, and easy to bend, I use the wafer screws mostly. But depends what you are attaching it to . Maybe longer self tapers like said above

This sounds like something that will work and doesn't seem to be too difficult. As long as they're not entering from my neighbor's yard. My cameras pick them up only on the side of my house.

Thanks for the replies.

People's cats drive me nuts. I choose not to have pets for the last 30 or so years and dont think I should have the animals of others crapping and spraying around my house. I used to be much harsher than I am now but I have mellowed out and basically gave up, realizing there is nothing I can do (legally) to them (the animals or the owners).

My wife welcomes them in her gardens to combat the moles and voles, and I have come to the point where I recognize they are also mousers and may help reduce the flow of field mice in to my garage...where they are snap-trapped mercilessly! What really ticks me off is when people's pets come on my property, they run when they see me; I should at least get to pet them if I have to host them! I DO love animals...

Good luck with your efforts but if there is something they are attracted to (like the wonderful smell of smokers), they will likely defeat your defenses.

Maybe longer self tapers
I suggested 1/2 wafer head not knowing the skin on the fence . 5/4's or maybe even 5/8's . Didn't want the screw poking out the other side , or maybe even splitting the board . Especially if it's weathered .

Yes i'm with you on the wafer screws. I have large boxes in the work truck all the time. Lots of steel stud work still.
I mentioned the longer self tappers as I was thinking along the top of fence into the posts , as the wafers are great also for joining the ends of the sheet work together. But have a backer piece of wood so no pin points on the underside.

Like you said not knowing what the fence is made from

They are cats , and hunters, can't get in one way. They will find another . Sorry

David

Well, right now I'm moving my cheap security cameras around, trying to find all the places , that they're coming in.

Long story short, neighbor's yards are not friendly to cats, they have dogs, etc.

And the back is sort've not receptive to cats. they would have to go a long way. Hard to describe.

But if this doesn't work, my next move is a motion detection sprinkler system.

Here's the two culprits from last night. Can see, that if I cover the top of those pickets with aluminum sheeting, they're SOL .

If I were really mean and cruel, which I'm not, I would trap them, spray paint them orange, and then let them go back home.

And if that did not send the message, I would trap them and take them 5 miles away to the river and let them loose.

But that's not me. And they're not doing that much damage.

I see they are both on top of a post . They're after something , so maybe your camera will see what that is . I see they make a spiked post topper . Not intended to harm , just as a deterrent .

Makes me wonder if something is in the overhang of the house .

My other cameras are telling me they're headed to my shed. Probably looking for rabbits or a rabbits litter. Which I've not seen there in weeks. Rabbit took off a while back.

And to get there, they go across my patio. Friday morning, they'd been through a trash can, that had some paper towel I'd used to clean grease out of my offset. In the process, they'd knocked over a step ladder.

Take pictures to your neighbors. You shouldn't have to go through the expensive of "cat proofing" your own property.
I've got coyote, coon, and fox issues in my back yard I'm trying to deal with, cameras tripping all the time from 3 different cats. They all just roam freely. 😡

Don't have much troubles with cats in Minnesota. The @ss neighbors that use to let fluffy out at night moved. I do have problems with deer and raccoons and the city leash law doesn't apply to them.
Friend of mine live traps cats as he has lots of neighbors that try to ignore the leash laws. He returns the trapped cat to the owners and tell them it is the last time it gets returned free.
The $150 bail to get fluffy back from the pound usually convinced them.

I have an electric fence around my garden. Cheaper to run hot and ground wires along the fence then flashing.

Luckily we don't have a problem with cats. Too many predators out and about. I will say the only cat I've seen on our property was a bobcat. The don't play to nice with house cats or feral cats. We do have mountain lions, too, but I've never seen one. Just the signs they leave behind. Bears, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and now wolves. House cats, smallish dogs, and little kids have no business being outside alone here.

However, I would love to get a cat in the garage who is a mouser extraordinaire!
