The wife and I are starting to plan a trip to Memphis next May (2010). We plan on driving down. About a 1000 mile trip for us. Has anyone been there and have any suggestions about the Memphis pig fest. Also planning on seeing Graceland and a few other sights. Figure we would reserve a room early and try and get good rates. Plan on staying a few miles out of town.

The wife has mentioned that she would like to go to Memphis in May to see it and to eat some world winning Q. I told her she already is eating good Q. We are fat kids nw and we travel to eat sometimes. Thats why we went to New Orleans and cann't wait to go back.

I live just outside of Memphis by about 1.5 hours and try to go every year. First thing to remeber is it rains evey year, Thats no lie and I mean every year, no exceptions.

Graceland is a must
The Zoo is awesome
And Beal Street is OK

Best Memphis BBQ
1 Rendezvous BBQ
2 Neely's BBQ

To me Bartlett TB is about the best area but its a good ways from the MIM event area. Dont really ahve much suggestions on hotels in the Area. I believe I would try Southhaven Mississippi. You cant tell where it starts and Memphis ends and its close to Graceland and not far from the MIM events........

I dont know yet if I will be home from work so dont know if I am going or not

Hope this helps...Lt em know if I can help any

I went to graduate school in Memphis between the late '78 and '82. A few of my classmates and I came in 3rd in the pork shoulder competition which I think was in '79. That was the 2nd year of the competition. We didn't know what we were doing, were drunk most of the time. Served our pulled pork to the judges on a paper plate that was wet and soggy while my best friend was hitting on one of the female judges. Ahhh the memories

I guess you can say it's come a long way since then.

My favorite place for pulled or sliced pork was Lamb's Eat Shop. A real little hole in the wall. Long gone now. Great pulled and sliced pork sandwiches, cole slaw and fried pies. I remember old Mr. Lamb bringing those large shoulders out of the oven while these 2 very old ladies would cut and pull the pork. It was real funny because one would often doze off while slicing then start up again.
