Anyone ever been "forced" to smoke?

Maybe forced is too strong of a word. 

My wife has been with her family for the last couple of weeks helping out her mum (both are English bred and born) foer medical reasons.  Our anniversary is coming up quite quickly and I will be going down south for not only our anniversary but to help the inlaws with packing up there house as they are moving in a couple of months.

Sooooooooooo, my beautiful bride "suggests" I smoke the one and only Boston butt in the freezer and bring the resulting PP down to Texas so we may have a BBQ with her family.  Her two brothers and one of the nieces will be there for the pack up and move.  Her folks have had my PP and they were blown away, not to toot my own horn, mind you.

It's not that I mind doing this, but it does bother me just a little bit that I'm going to do the PP only to vacuum seal it, freeze it and then transport it.  I do enjoy cooking/smoking for others but I will be all alone with the exception of my ever faithful companion, my aged German Shepard, Gator.

Supposedly, my father-in-law will be cooking some other things on the grill, along with other sides and whatnots.  Last time I went down to Texas for a family get together I ended up spending the entire time on the grill.  I did have a few folks that came up to me and thanked me for doing the cooking, including my FIL, but I missed out on most of the party.

I let my wife know that I'll do the PP but please don't expect me to get on the grill.  She said I wouldn't be but I guess we'll have to see how things turn out.

Just curious if anyone else ever gets roped into doing more than what they've been told or "forced" to do some smoking.

And as hard as this may be to believe, I really do get along very well with my in-laws.

Its the opposite at my house. Wife does not like smoked food, and my German Shepherd also sits next to me when I smoke.

My wife is only a real fan of PP and ribs.  Kind of discouraging when I love to smoke so much more and she doesn't even like smoked cheese and butter!

Anyways, just finished pulling the pork and had asked her if I should bring it all down.  She "suggested" that I put some to the side for us when we get back home.

Women:  Can't live with them and...

well, best not say anymore as sometimes she gets on here to see what I'm rambling on about.

Mine certainly eats PP when I do it, but she thinks its not healthy. I don't know, I am pretty fat and healthy!!

Sounds like a lotta stress possibly down there what with the medical alerts and the packing up. Best to pick your battles and this one could end badly. Take comfort in the fact you are the 'go to' guy for good chow and bite the popper while cracking open another long neck. My GF's not crazy about ribs and can take or leave most other smoked delights.....baffles me to no end.

I smoked some pulled pork one day and threw some of my homemade barbecue sauce on it, and shared it with two members of my fire department, and they told everyone else how amazing it was.  No one really expected me to be a good cook, but they begged me for a while to make some for everyone at our monthly meeting.  I finally did and everyone loved it.  Big mistake for me because now they always want me to cook for them.

Never experienced that at my house, I'm always trying to think of another reason why I have to smoke something! Take heart that your inlaws love your food you are able to give them joy while they are here for you to enjoy their company.... That's a very high compliment in my book! You did a good thing for them. Enjoy your time with them. David.

I get "voluntold" to smoke by my coworkers a lot. I took two weeks off over spring break and when I went back last week I got told that I'm grilling hamburgers tomorrow. I'm fine with it though as long as they're chipping in cash to cover the cost of the meat. It's just one more thing to throw in the smoker on a Tuesday morning and I'm going to be out there anyway.

I do usually end up with grill duty if we go to my parents' or the in-laws' but it is mostly by my choice to have food that is edible. My dad has lots of skills, including catching trout when no one else can, but he can't grill to save his life. My mother in law's idea of grilling is to turn everything on the grill to charcoal "so she knows it is cooked all the way" including hot dogs.

Lucked into a wife that likes just about everything I cook but even more importantly will tell me when something I cooked wasn't right. She's fixed several recipes for me and she's always been right.

Yes, forced is a harsh word . . . I cannot be forced , I'm in the middle of it all. . .that's my "problem". O.S.D. (Obsessive Smoking Disorder).

When I was pulling the pork last night, or rather this morning as it was after midnight, I of course had to sample bits here and there.  I give it my seal of approval for sure!  And this was without the finishing sauce or any BBQ sauce. 

Truth be told, I do enjoy smoking but prefer to serve it at home rather than transporting it a few states down.  I'll make it down for Easter and my other inlaws are supposed to show up on Mon.  Monday just happens to be our 24th anniversary to boot.  I guess after we get the household items loaded up in the moving truck we'll have a bbq of sorts.

I did vacuum seal the PP so we can just toss it in a pot of boiling water to reheat and I'll make the finishing sauce and the bbq sauce.  I don't know what else will cooked/made.  Hopefully there is more than enough PP for everyone.

Last year my inlaws came up about month after we moved in.  I had set a date to have a bbq party to thank the folks that helped us out.  Only problem was only one person showed up out of the group as the others had previous plans.  I did PP and ribs, with the ribs being done on the grill.  Hardly anyone touched the ribs as the PP was gone before anyone knew it and everyone was stuffed.  The one lady that showed up, I don't know if she had ever had PP as she couldn't stop talking about.  It was like she just discovered the stuff.

I am happy to do this for my inlaws, and I'm sure the three BIL's, niece and their family members are going to enjoy themselves.  I also think my wife likes to "brag" just a tiny bit about my cooking as it does make me feel pretty good!

And just a bit of good news when I ran down to town to run a few errands today, I found Boston butts at $1.21/lb!  I didn't get any as I wanted to find out if they did case pricing.  Couldn't find anyone to answer the question, plus I wasn't equipped to haul any meat back up to the hills as I didn't bring a cooler.  When we get back home you better believe I'll be loading up on those butts!
