You know what, I'm 67. Living on a company pension. It's a very good pension but it will never go up as it is a fixed income till I die. When things go up in price I cut back. I have no investments as I never was that type of guy to invest money, I just spent it. I complain when things go up all the time like gas. My son who is 21 and is just starting out on his lifes journey tells me "dad don't worry so much about what gas costs, people will still buy it as they need it."
I stopped buying steaks everytime I go for groceries and just treat myself to one or two a month. Hamburger, chicken and pork is on my plate most times now. Can't say I am starving but look forward to my steak dinner once or twice a month.
Missing the old days thats for sure.

They are fleecing us!! Its everywhere, from food to gas to insurance to property taxes!! I am so PO'd about it all. My wife and I do alright and should be fine but we still struggle, It is crazy!!

I have a 20-year-old daughter who struck out into the World with her less than 2-year-old son. I still pay her car payment, car insurance, cell phone, and keep her on my health insurance and I know she struggles. She gets child support here and there and zero government assistance. I just wonder how much longer she can work 50+ hour weeks. My 18-year-old son isn't moving out anytime soon, he knows it is just too much. Car Insurance just went up and the sad part is I might drive my car 50 miles a week. They offered to put an app on my phone that detects when I am driving but it can't tell between driving at work (I'm a cop) and driving at home... I would never recover from that rate hike. I work a second job in law enforcement tech sales (hourly+commission) and I am thankful that defunding didn't work and agencies are spending again. I won't even go down the rabbit hole of blaming right or left... the economy ebbs and flows. I have two budgets in my house one for lean months where we pay the bills and don't spend and one for months when we can splurge a tad. It seems to work. If the increases don't slow up or stop every month might be a lean month. I feel bad for anyone just starting out, the World has become an expensive place.

11 months left of house payments then the insurance will fall back on us, been nice not having to worry about it as it was built into the house payment. Payment went down $20 something my wife said, thats a new 1 for me, has always crept up due to property tax increases ect..

My Papaw always said "If you want to see folks get themselves in a tussle, just bring up politics, religion, or money"

He's been right about a bunch of things :)

Oh, and I just paid for my homeowners policy and renewed the policy on my boat. Not once did I consider running to SMF and complaining about it.

Ya'll need to cook more and post pics of the food man! I love that stuff.
Yea, the problem is, people can dish it out but cant take it. Cant have a conversation about religion and politics with a lot of people because they arent willing to actually debate...their heads are rock hard...they are right and you are wrong...unless you agree with them of course.

I've always been "middle of the roadkill". I can accidentally tick just about anyone off!

One of MY grandfathers use to say "wish in one hand and sh!t in the other and see which one fills the fastest"!.

This thread is in the "Blowing Smoke Around the Smoker" sub-forum. It was put here for social interaction, thats why it is separate from the actual cooking subjects. I cant imagine hanging around the smoker or grill with folks and the conversation never leaves the food.

There's another old saying, "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy".

I'm glad to see Politics is staying out or pretty much staying out of this thread. Let's keep it that way so nobody locks it you know them Mods and Admins just love to lock everything :emoji_laughing:
Next you are not required to click on every thread on SMF if there is a thread you don't like or don't like the topic in general then don't click on it to open it. This section is mostly for non smoke related stuff and this subject would be one of those non smoke related subjects that fits this section. As long as politics and religion aren't put into the thread then it's fine to be here. Many of us spend quite a bit of time here and have developed some friends here even though we have not met most of them in real life they are still friends. Heck there are people on here I have conversed with for the last 10-15 years and consider them pretty good friends. So as long as politics isn't in this thread then we don't need the "stick to smoking thread stuff"
I know it probably won't do any good but I've said several times lately when insurance and the rates for it get brought up that I need to check with some other companies and see if they are any cheaper. Seems every time we get a bill from an insurance company the rates have gone up and not just a couple bucks but a lot. We have a problem finding anyone to write acreage and have had only one company we have found to get house and property insurance through.
We are debt free thank goodness those that aren't I feel sorry for you and prices on about everything going up I don't know how you do it. I really feel sorry for young people just starting out on their own the most. i can remember a time when I worked a full time job and two part time jobs to make the money I wanted to live the way we wanted to but heck these days it may take that for some people just to pay their bills.
We are down to three vehicles and the rates are crazy and it bothers me what we pay for a vehicle that is driven less than 5000 miles a year heck most of the time less than 3000 a year.
I see people saying that it's because the insurance companies have so many claims maybe they need another set of rates for those that haven't had any claims for either property of autos.
Sorry for such a long post lets keep the politics out of it and keep posting maybe somebody can find the answer for us.
Oh we are old live in Florida and my wife does work 2-3 shifts a week mostly to keep me insured but I will turn 65 this year.

several points have been made and are solid points. one thing I'm struggling with is the keep politics out of it. the topic is costs are rising on insurance preminiums and that is correct. so is the costs of proteins as discussed in food sections many times. Mentioned claims were up, I havnt seen any stats but I know from the news been several tornados and such have happened. rate adjustment no doubt is affected by number of claims. it is also affected by cost to cover those claums with material and labor that have really went up in last couple of years. now we all know that many factors play in our economy. supply demand etc, also policy of the current political players has large impacts. my facts are currently what I pay for things is up, 401k growth has receded. not to long ago this was not the case. I or anyone else has a right to an opinion and should be able to state it without fear. we do it on here all the time about food; wrap or naked, dry or wet, fat side up fatside down and so on. People who disagree say as much. what I find pitiful is those topics we discuss and even agree to disagree. but dang mention politics and someone is butt hurt cusses first thing next post and threats to shut down thread ensues. why can't I or anyone else disagree and argue, debate anymore.
if I cuss at someone about or how the brisket they did as the wrong way I will probably be scolded, warned or banned with my post deleted but the thread would continue. why should a thread in off topic sectioned be locked due to one or a few who don't like or agree with someone else's opinion.

farm bureau for us. however my early 20s daughter just got rate hiked pretty bad and is shopping around.

All things have been effected by inflation and it does not feel good. Home prices are way higher than they should be. A new truck that was 35k a few years ago is now 60k. A fender bender on a Accord is now a $13,000 fix. Building materials are still high and hard to come by. McD's has to pay a high school kid $15 an hour. So it all combines into more $ spent to live.

I can see somewhat how insurance is going up with all the storms, my grip is with corps raking in record profits due to big price hikes. Meat companies tripling their profits, fuel corp same thing. Everyone in DC bitches about it but nothing is ever done (both sides) as they are all in bed with each other while we have to figure on dealing with it.

Step son is almost 20 and I think he pays like $235 a month for a 2013 Honda Accord. No wrecks or tickets on his record.
Same her almost, she had a claim right at the start, imagine that lol, of her driving but was minor. her rate just jumped 265 a year. I know that's not huge over 12 months but still it was out of no where.

My home owners and vehicles insurance went up tremendously this year. Coincidentally get a call from my agent to have a meeting to be sure I'm covered enough/correctly.
Should have seen the look on his face. When I told him to cancel everything and I only wanted a minimum liability policy on everything! Since everything I have is paid for now. My HO is already paid for this year. I might change my min about it next March. The 5 cars, 2 boats, and camper will cost me if something happens but I've never a claim either.
My property taxes make me want to sell my newer vehicles along with the boats and camper. LoL

Taxes and insurance rolled into a mortgage makes it nice, but there were years where my escrow account didn't fully cover the taxes and insurance.

Option was to pay the deficit or roll it into the next year. You're still paying taxes and insurance just the same, but once your mortgage is paid, you just have to stash enough back for taxes and insurance each month.

I own my farm outright so I just have to keep the tax man and insurance agent happy.

I always hated having taxes paid through the mortgage, in NY they keep 6 months extra so they have time to foreclose on you and not have any taxes owed. As soon as I hit the threshold and refinanced I pulled that away from them. Now the houses are paid off, it does suck writing out the $7500 check twice a year for taxes. Can't wait to go some where like SC or TN in a few years and really lower that amount.
