I have 2 Masterbuilt XL propane smokers and just swithed to using the AMNPS 12"" tube.  I get it lit and get the meat on with no problem.  I built a bracket so the tube is elevated and air can get all the way around it.  i just cant keep it lit.  It goes out in about an hour.  I open the door and it starts back up.  This tells me its a air flow problem.  How can I get more air without losing heat?

Couple of questions

How close do you have it to the burner - the burner will suck up all the available oxygen around it

How close is it to an air intake source - see if you can find a place where it can get more oxygen

The burneris about 6 inches away i cant get it any further. The only air is coming in wher the burner is.  Im thinking of using a hole saw right under the front of the tube to get more air.  Do you think that would effect heat also?

I didnt see the moderator message the first of the post I replied to.  Thats why there are 2.  Sorry still trying to get the hang of the forum.

Search the forums a bit. I have seen others with the XL put it on the rack along the side of the smoker, up off the bottom. I know when I had my XL with the stock burner, it was starved for air to burn. There isn't much oxygen left depending on the flame level. Cutting a hole in the bottom might help, and will result in minimal heat loss. Linguica is absolutely right though...

I just sent Todd a note - I am sure he will be along soon to help

Good Answers!!

Some guys place it on the bottom shelf, and others, right in the water pan(Without Water!)

The mass of the pellets allows it to burn in a low oxygen atmosphere, but it still needs some oxygen to burn.

Have you tried different locations on the shelf?

Adding an additional intake is a good idea, and will cause very minimal heat loss

Here's a link to Savannahsmoker's post, where he used the Tube Smoker in his Masterbuilt Propane

I can't seem to get the pics to load......

Personally, I have the 18" and just lay it across one of the unused shelves. I actually got 7 hours out of a mostly full tube running 150 for 3 hours and 250 the rest of the way! JUST BE SURE TO LET IT BURN FOR 10 MINUTES PRIOR!

I have a GOSM wide body.  Here is where I put my 18" tube when smoking at a lower 225 degrees.

When doing some wings at a higher temp I had some trouble keeping it going.  I moved it to the very bottom and back of smoker along the back wall.  It was pretty close to the burner but with the exhaust holes on each side and the gap around the burner it smoked really well.

I will echo what others have said. Let flame burn for 10 minutes before blowing it out!  Don't get in a rush.
