I am going to fire the 40" MES up tomorrow or Satuday, volunteered to do pulled pork for a company lunch. I also thought I would do a turkey for sandwiches. My last smoke using the amazn pellet smoker was a complete failure. I gave up and went to using the chip loader and aple chips.

Here is the plan:

Start the smoker to get up to temp 225

nuke the pellets for one minute

load the amazn pellet smoker light and let burn app 10 minutes

any other suggestions?

I also have a 40" MES and have used the AMNPS without a hitch.  Be sure to pull the chip loader out about an inch and a half, this will get the air flow that you need.  Leave the vent wide open and I put a 3" PVC elbow over it to help with the draw.  A soup can with both ends cut off would probably work as well.

If you have enough draft with the vent wide open you should be in good shape. Also, leave the chip holder pulled out about an 1 - 1-1/2" to allow air to draw, and then it will probably improve.I tent my AMNPS and don't rely on the MES 40 for anything but heat and a cabinet.Good luck!

The pitmaster pellets would light and smolder good then die out after being put in the MES. I had the chip pan pulled out and the chip loader pulled out app 2 inches. Was tring to smoke at app 225 degrees. I also made a tent cover for the amazn pellet smoker. I have the new model 40 inch with the top vent being on the side of the cabinet.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions.

If you have the model 0512 MES 40, which it sounds like you do, you shouldn't need a tent over the AMNPS if you're placing it on the floor drip pan. It should be protected from drippings by the water pan & drip deflector (as they call it). Just my $.02

Hope it works out for ya Let us know I am thingking about getting a MES and I already have the maze and tube and luv them in my fridge build.

Thanks for that info maybe that is my problem. I have even thought about pulling the chip pan out completely. Are you using an amazn pellet smoker, if so what is your setup?

Yes, I have the 0512 and I'm using the AMNPS. I place it where I stated, pull the chip loader chute out about 2" and pull the chip tray out about 1 to 1-1/2". The first time I used the AMNPS in it I also had a time keeping it lit. After playing with how much I have the chute pulled out I got a continuous burn. I also paid closer attention to placement of the smoker so the chute side wasn't facing away from the breeze. I haven't pulled the chip tray completely out so I can't really speak to that. Maybe others have. I think it is possible that with your AMNPS on the bottom, a tent over it and being so close to the bottom of the water pan it might have been starved for oxygen.

I think I will remove the foil tent. I had it sitting next to the element, that sounds right.I am also thinking on my first try with the AMNPS it was windy out, and coming from all directions.

I am doing a dry run today. Heated smoker up, nuked the pellets for 3 minutes[ note to self to long they were hot and maybe smoking]. Slide empty watrer pan in removed tent from amazn pellet smoker, pulled chip tray out app 2 inches loader out the same. Lit pellets let burn for app 10 min. Been in smoker for app one hour and still burning

Nuke for one minute. To remove any moisture.

This  link may or may not provide info that can help you since your MES is the latest generation, mine is one of the earliest generations.  However I think it will benefit you, if you make the effort to make a proper cover, you will NOT have to NUKE pellets, and you can use the water pan as intended by design.
