I've been considering a new vertical propane smoker. I look at mfr sites, retail sites ect. I even look at the electric and charcoal models. To my untrained eye they all look pretty much the same. Sometimes I think I have noticed this opens on the right, that one on the left, but other than that nearly identicle. Then I read reviews here and they all seem to suffer from the same short comings and could use the same mods. Door gaps, yellow flames, won't get hot enough, won't run low ect.

Is the design just so simple that they are by their nature gonna look alike or are they possibly made in the same factory with minor tweeks for this nameplate or that ?

They are all basically a Box and a Burner, with some set up to hold wood to generate smoke. Some have a second door to access the burner area to add wood or water, without opening the smoke chamber. But all keep it simple. There are different manufacturers. It may take some searching and phone calls but look for thicker metal, better burner material and a size that suits your needs. They pretty much all need needle valves to get temps below 200°. Read reviews and ask questions of the guys that use them. Stick to threads from 2014-2015 when asking questions as members in old threads may have moved on and you won't get an answer from them...JJ
