Here's a silly question.....
Do any of you use ONLY wood logs to smoke with? If so where does one get the appropriate logs? I could go to the local woods and "rustle up" some but I don't know oak from choke cherry

.

Thanks for the help!

lump coal or electric to heat-a little wood to smoke-never all wood here

Me, lump charcoal...I would think that if you were using wood for your heat source you would either need you rig open all the time, or the wood would need to be pre-burned...but I have no idea!! lots of peeps here will however, just wait!

I use all wood in this smoker.

And lump and wood chunks in this smoker.

I get my logs from the side of the road, when someone cuts a tree down. Or when I trim my pecan trees. Another good place to get wood is from craigslist.com. If you dont know what kinda wood it is then snap a picture and post it here. You'll have your answer in no time.

A good start would be an electric smoker. It's a hassle free way to get started and you just put your soaked wood chips in and let the smoker do the work. A grill shop would probably have wood chips and some grocery stores carry hickory and misquite (sp?). Low&Slow, I'm downright jealous of your propane tank smoker.

big mamma jamma here is a all stick burner, tex is right it's more work, and will sure go through the wood but it is great q,people around here sell oak and hickory by the truck load, plus people always just bring wood to me i usually hook'em up with a butt and sauce for their trouble.

I burn all wood in my Horizon and about 1/2 wood in my WSM.
I don't see all wood being more work, i can stoke the fire box and get 6+ hours on a load of wood.
