Adding fuel to the fire

Would you expect to add additional lit chimneys of fuel to the SFB for a 10-12 hour smoke or can you maintain the temp by just adding a handful of lump every so often

I add lit chimneys when my target temp starts to drop 10-15 degrees.

I think that's the only way to maintain the temp. Adding a few pieces of unlit at a time
Really doesn't do it,, I wonder if I just use wood would do the job
