330 gallon smoker

I am building a smoker out of a 330 gallon fuel take. I am building it as it stands on the legs. I have the doors cut and ran into a issue. I would like to know if I just make a flat surface out of expansion metal for the coal to go on will this work just as goo as making a tray. Thanks

Not sure about the construction, but I'd stand back pretty far when I lit that fuel tank!
