Whats the mailbox mod some guys do? What is it for?

Its for use on the MES. Instead of using the garbage chip dumper you connect a mailbox to the MES with piping and place the AMNPS in the mailbox. Provides more airflow hence a cleaner smoke and no problems keeping the pellets lit.

Here is an example. I think it belongs to Old Goat.

I run the AMNPS in my MES40 but haven't had problems keeping it lit so no need to do it. Just place the tray directly in the smoker. Hope this helps

yeah smokinvol got you covered, like he said some have luck keeping it lit inside the smoker, some don't which i'm one of them so I went with the mailbox mod. what kind of smoker do you have. this is a pic of mine.

and folks really shouldn't use galvanized metal just to be safe, just my thoughts on that lol

also the factory chip holder isn't garbage, it just takes a lot of effort to reload it every 30-60 minutes for 3-5 hrs. cant tell you how many times I've reloaded mine over the years, I will say it got loaded with small chunks more than chips the last 5-6 years and they last much longer

Hi there and welcome! I think the guys have you covered.
They can come in all shapes and sizes. I run my A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker (AMNPS)tray in a mailbox mod that uses a wall hanging mailbox and is extremely compact and built all like one piece. It works well for me!
