Ditto to ravens post. I have the older one(blackstone). Love it but that front grease catch is a pain. Really don't think you can go wrong with a griddle period. haven't used the camp chef but did see a Nexus in Home Depot the other day that looks a lot like both of them.

Well krap. Just as I was getting happy with my pellet smoker this comes along. Agree with all on the "not quite true" smoke flavor you get with the pellets but could overlook some of that for the convenience, plus the extended run time compared to an offset( hated getting up every 2 hrs to keep...
when I smoked that way I always soaked my chips, obviously helps with the catching fire thing you had going on but also lets them "smoke" longer. Suspect your chips are essentially burning up and out every 30 minutes.

I use one of these. Works quite well, cleans up easy and keeps a cooler temperature here in AZ
I have not tried the Camp Chef ones but have used the Pit Boss and Traeger ones and can tell you that there is a world of difference using the cookingpellets or LumberJack brands, not only in the smoke but in the temp swings.
