Not until it get to the very bottom of the pot. The bottom swings open to light and to let ash out. It also is the damper. I welded two pieces of expanded metal vertically inside for air flow as well. I can take pictures after work if interested.

I use the bubble wrap stuff that was mentioned above(from home depot)without problems. No melting or foul odors. I have a smoke vault 24 propane fired.
Awesome! Thanks Nepas! I had them hanging on the porch last night and they started to frost last night so I brought them in. They still felt cool to the touch this morning. Internal temp was 54 degrees. I plan to start smoking this afternoon. Should be interesting. It's windy and cold.
