I have the Backyard Beast 1200, and as MO Smokeshow noted, the only difference is the extra space on the upper racks. That appears to be a savings of about $100 on the 1000, though. FWIW, I'm looking at buying a 2nd Recteq for some other needs.

I have a RecTeq Backyard Beast. It can be run w/o an app on your phone. As far as I can tell, the app is only used for guided cooks (and to let RecTeq know exactly what you're up to.) It's handy, but not necessary.
