Are you strictly interested in an electric smoker or are pellet grills something you're considering? They're basically smoker ovens with wood pellets as a fuel source.
My experience has been that the meat quality is better at Costco. Costco also has a much better variety. However it is more expensive.
I shop at Sam's more because their peripheral items are better or more cost efficient. Foil pans, paper towels, baby diapers, etc.... also Costco has some weird...

Thanks for the write up! I have an XL 1400 coming in this week. I was gifted a pellet smoker years ago & as soon as I became a dad it became my preferred method at home.
Good point on the pellets. I've been using BBQ Delight & had good results.
