This is the thread . Theres a lot in there , so take some time and look through it . If your serious about doing it start a thread and several members here can help ya get it done . It's a lot...
Here's the complicated explanation:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional%E2%80%93integral%E2%80%93derivative_controller
Basically it's a controller that can hold your temps within +/- 1℉ of your set temp when calibrated right. On the MES this done with a simple rewire that bypasses the...
Again, thanks for your help with this.
I tested my independent therm and it shows 33F in a ice bath and 212F in boiling water so it seems to be fairly trustworthy. I ran a more documented test and her is what I found. The smoker digital consistently indicated lower temps than the independent...
@KonaRich the only thing you'll accomplish using a PID this way is turning your MES off after the temp set on the PID is reached. It would be no different than simply unplugging your smoker and then plugging it back in.
Then you'll need to turn the MES back on at the control panel, reset the...
This would be an ideal time to convert over to a PID controller. Makes the MES a much better smoker.
Nothing more than a fairly simple rewire.

Time to get an Auber PID and bypass all the electronics on the controller panel. Will make a much better smoker for you with more controllable temps.

Many of us run this unit...
...you can just rewire the MES 40 and slap on this same PID and you are good to go.
You can read up on all the details of doing the simple MESrewire for use with a PID controller here:

In short...
Don't give up on that MES quite yet. They can be brought back to life with a simple rewire and the addition of PID controller which will turn it into a smoker much better than when you bought it.
This is so easily done you would regret paying someone to do it.

If you're still not comfortable I'll tag @tallbm to help you out.
Auber is plug and play with the original Bradley. And with the MES a simple rewire, same with the analog Smokin-It just done a little different and I'm sure probably the same with other electric brands.
As far as settings go it depends on your smoker.I didn't have to stray to far from the stock...
As another thread will show, I have a second hand MES which 'doesn't get hot'. Anyone willing to rebuild it with an Auber, etc. for a fee? I'll deliver and pick up and (obviously) pay for all the parts. I have no mechanical skills and my wife wouldn't trust anything I've 'fixed' that runs on...
Hello from RI.
Lots of MES owners have done the simple rewire and added a PID and the first thought afterwards is asking yourself why you waited so long to do it. It certainly is a game changer for the MES.
Hi All,
Hoping to get a bit of help.
I have the Auber AW-1520H V2 and I want to do the MESrewire to replace the controller for better temp control/smoking.
I have been following the guide and failed at the first hurdle which is identifying the correct wires to bypass. Mainly because my...
Welcome to the forum.
Here is a link to a page here on this forum that will explain everything. It’s 20+ pages so happy reading, but everything you need to know plus some is there.

Depends on how it was rebuilt. The simple rewire completely bypasses the MES electronics and is directly controlled by the PID.
But if you're truly ready to get rid of it there's plenty of folks that'll take it off your hands for that reason. If you still have it hanging around the first week of...
If you like what you are making who gives a rats rear end what Joe Blow down the street thinks? I have a Weber kettle, MES 40 and a Pit Boss 100SC. Only one i don't use is the MES, but that's because it needs a rewire and i don't have time. If you like it that's all that matters.
Thanks for the pictures!
As norman said left is safety limit switch, right is heating element.
Their is no burning or discoloration from the pictures but be sure to look under the covers of the connects. Often they can look fine but when you go under the covers or go to pull the connectors off...
