Hello from RI.
I wouldn't make to much of a habit of running your MES off an extension cord. A dedicated GFCI for it would be ideal but that's not always possible, in my case I have an outside one that when using my MES the only other thing on that circuit is my basement dehumidifier that I can...
Here's a few links:
This is how to rewire the MES for a PID controller:

My own hack for using a smoke tube either inside the MES or in the mailboxmod...
Good luck picking a replacement for your Akorn.
All smoking platforms have their place and time.
My wife prefers less smoke so I have to be careful even with just my pellet pooper as it can get pretty acrid in the smoke mode.
The forced induction of a pellet pooper would blow all the smoke out...
Built a DIY PID with an Inkbird ITC-106vh controller.
Wondering if anybody has used this on a Masterbuilt 40.
I run a AMNPS tray in a mailbox mod .
Looking for the PID settings that worked for you. TIA
Pellets tubes are also great to add more smoke flavor in a pellet grill.
I highly recommend Norn's u-bolt add to a tube. Helps hold in the pellets when you start and helps add more airflow. Mine use to go out when laid flat.
Find a used 40" MES on Craigslist,FB market place or wherever.Rewire it for a PID then do the mailbox mod and use an Amazen tube/tray in it.
You'll never have a better electric smoker for the money.
Welcome the SMF from Indiana. Glad to have ya!
Electric smokers can do the job but you end up having to constantly tend them a feeding chips. Most have done a mailbox mode to use them with a pellet tray which frees them from constantly feeding. Lots of threads here on the mailbox mod for MES...
I just bought a new R.T Beast 1000, I love it for what it is, a pellet "grill".
I've never been happy with the smoke flavor of pellet grills, I use them for convenience, and ease of use. When I want really smoke house flavor, I either use my offset or drum smoker. I will sometimes use my drum...
Welcome to SMF! Yes the MES units are known for being inaccurate. Most here have gone the way of putting in a PID which does an excellent job AND many have done the mailbox mod which frees up feeding wood chips.
I actually geeked out and measured it. Adds around 20F if directly in smoker. Adds zero heat if you do the mailboxmod. Also, you can get a tray instead of tube and use dust which add no heat. If you add PID it becomes a BEAST. Will hold temps insanely good. Most of us set it up to run a...
Initially, I put a 12” square concrete paver wrapped in foil on the bottom rack to act as a heat sink and help stabilize the temp. It helped a little.
The temp control problem is the wood chips burning in the cabinet. Once they get going, they add a lot of heat that you can’t control. Do a...
I run a MES40 Gen 2 since 2013. I recently added a mailbox mod with pellet tube or maze which solved many serious problems. I recently looked into a PID, but was not sold with advantages of steady temps over the usual +/- 20 degree swings electric smokers are known for. Our kitchen oven works...
I appreciate the response, if you can pm me some links to these upgrades I don’t mind spending a few hundred lol, I use my big pellet grill all the time so this will be a learning curve as I know nothing about this thing other than turning it on, do you use the water pan on these?
There’s videos of people mixing pellets and small chips right into the hopper. Recteq has a pretty good auger motor, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I personally haven’t tried it, just like I haven’t bought the charcoal pellets either. I have a kettle, I have an offset, they have their own...
Thanks....I asked because I picked up an MES30 on Craigslist and bought the Master Built Slow Smoker bolt-on. I have not hooked it up yet, and I was wondering if you were perhaps using it.
