Hi guys, I wrote a brief description of my situation in roll call if you want to check that out. I'm probably going to be designing this thing over the next month or so, but I'm new to basically everything (including welding) and smoker design so I will definitely need some help along the way...
Hey all.
UK bbq here.
Now I’ve got myself an oil drum bbq that I used as a smoker over the weekend. Did a cracking ribs recipe which was a winner using “madscientistbbq” YouTube. But I struggled burning a clean fire as there’s not a huge amount of air getting in even though I’ve got a vent...
Thank you all very much, I had a really rough night last night I was laid out of the floor with a horrible back flare up.....Stupid spine!!!
I haven't had the chance to check out the calculator yet, I will check it out tonight.
Thank you for the vote of confidence, I sometimes need that to kick...

I've seen people go back and forth that the calculator I linked isn't accurate. Rule of thumb is you want your fire box (FB) to be roughly 1/3 of the size of your cook chamber (CC).
Only other thing I'd caution you about is that...

Hey guys, its been years in the making but I am finally starting on the build using several salvaged items out of an old garage that a friend purchased. I received several items that I could work into a plan, but have settled on the using the 44" x 27" x 48" oval fuel oil tank as the cook...
I'm nearing the end of my build of two 55 gal drums welded together end to end and one 55 gal drum on the bottom as the firebox. I have two 6" holes coming from the bottom of the firebox with flues leading into the cook chamber. I am going to have a plate the runs all the way across the bottom...
First, I do know how to use Google. I'll try to number my questions so that it's easier to respond and also easier for someone responding to tell me to Google it if I'm asking dumb/basic questions. I have very thick skin, I prefer brutal/blunt honesty. You won't hurt my feelings so please don't...
Is that a 30 gallon drum they used for the firebox? How high above the bottom of the cook chamber is the RF plate mounted? What are the dimensions of the cook chamber?
Here is an online calculator that will help with the firebox dimensions: http://feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html

Hey y'all,
I'm building a smoker for the first time. I just bought a 275 gal. propane tank. I'm planning on doing a RF. My welding experience is pretty much none. After reading some other threads and using the Alien BBQ calculator, I've come up with the following so far:
FB/CC opening: 254.1...
Hi Bob
Trying to picture the concept from reading a description is always difficult as there is a lot of room for interpretation. As Danny mentions above a drawing of what you are trying to achieve would be very helpful. But from what you have written above I have the following...

Good Morning. Found this site while I was looking for information on building a UDS. Been smoking for a lot of years using retail equipment, charbroil offset, Kenmore (sears) cabinet propane smoker and a smoke box for my Weber Silver C. All of which work just fine but none of them have the...
Hi Guys,
Long time lurker and first time poster! I'm hailing from Tasmania, Australia and am a huge fan of smoking and use SMF on a regular basis. I am an Apple Cider producer to have access to a lot of Stainless Kegs and have built a couple of upright smokers with them. While I have been able...
Just finished my first competition and realised I need a more reliable smoker. The wind was blowing around 25-30 causing my temp in my piece of crap non insulated smoker to fluctuate to much. The result was horrible meat but somehow I won 2nd place in the pork, thanks to chef jimmy and his...
