...I also think the weldingblanket would be a good choice. Whether it's cold or not, more insulation will never hurt and only lead to more consistent and longer lasting temps.
Outside those 2 items, some heavy duty real metal, no bendy, tongs. So you can pick up a big giant pork butt with...
Personally, I would worry about insulating it.
If anything you could screw in some hooks around the top edge then hang a weldingblanket from the hooks. I wouldn't even do that though, I'd use it as is, but I'm in Cali. we don't get cold enough to effect a smoker.
I've used uninsulated Lure...
Side note for us Northern cookers, pick up a weldingblanket at HF Tools and throw that over your grill when cooking or smoking. Makes a BIG difference on holding the heat in and at a steady temp.
Got like 20lbs smoked stuff all vac sealed up for the moment I start jonesing, no ribs tho. That said curious how the Smokefire does in the cold, have not tried it. Have a weldingblanket for my gasser.
If you have a weldingblanket or a friend who does, just drape it over the CC & keep adding charcoal & wood. You will need a big fire. Good luck & keep us posted! Also there is no shame in finishing them in the oven!

...It seems more like a weldingblanket or woven material of some kind as opposed to a rubber mat.
Now to my questions...
@Its_Raw, is your new cooking area covered and protected from sun and rain?
Is this concrete pad covered overhead? I know it's an internet pic, but am curious if you know...
Glad to hear you and your mom are still amongst us!
Just FYI the pellet should work well at that elevation as should it when it’s cold…..but might have to put a weldingblanket over it for the real cold days!
On and yes life happens and priorities change but you still got to eat right?
...get wood for free
I never tried bricks for a heat sink, but I doubt it will do much. To me, the best method to hold heat would be a weldingblanket put over the cover. With the amount those thing leak smoke the blanket will be stained very quickly.
I thought about adding an interior liner...
If you find you need a blanket, and they don't have a cold weather blanket for their grill, you can get weldingblankets pretty cheap at Harbor Freight.
I'd make sure it's just level as Steve suggested.
The weldingblanket is a big plus in truly cold weather. All I use are a couple of bungee cords to keep wrapped and in place.
And when the time comes there are some simple mods that will turn your MES into a much more user friendly smoker. When...
...connecting it to the existing stack? Or keep it more of a casual, convenient relationship?
2. I read that someone here recommended a weldingblanket for insulation. Thoughts?
Presently I just keep the firebox opening totally exposed, no door, controlling the temp with the damper in the main...
...change with temp/humidity/elevation, etc. etc. Masterbuilt smokers have none. Or little insulation to keep even temp. I bought a cheap harbor freight weldingblanket to insulate the smoker. Do a search for that mod. Keeping the smoker out of the wind in cold weather helps as well. Smoke on!
...connecting it to the existing stack? Or keep it more of a casual, temporary relationship?
2. I read that someone here recommended a weldingblanket for insulation. Maybe more effective and stylish than what I made? Might help convince spouse to agree to a permanent attachment.
Presently I...
It's a digital model. Glad what I'm experiencing isn't uncommon. Level or if anything slightly tipped backwards? Definitely going to invest in the weldingblanket as I plan on smoking my way through a Western New York winter.
...I posted and A roll of this and you'd only have about $300 stuck into your smoker. I made A wrap of this with foil tape and also use weldingblanket. Tough to beat this for sausage ,fish etc. where lower temps are needed. Most pellet grills, the low end for temps is about 180-190°...
Like @Steve H said, little insulation in the MES smokers. I wrapped mine in reflectix wrap and then a Harbor Freight weldingblanket. Use it this way yr round . Kinda want to keep the damper open fully to avoid stale smoke. Would "highly" suggest using a digital thermometer inside to verify your...
...the digital MES. Much better than I ever expected. Do not think analog can really compete there if it was anything like my gasser. Weldingblanket hack might work but do not know. So I stand on my recommendation of the digital before PID as it's cheaper to do. I recommend going wifi if...
